Opening Day 1998 the 1st game of the 1998 season from Shea Stadium and the debut of the Fox Sports New York (FSNY) Broadcast (formally Sportschannel) with Ralph Kiner, Howie Rose, Fran Healy and Matt Loughlin. Recorded and Digitalized off pre recorded VHS tapes which were later converted to DVD through a DVD burner (2002) and has been recently restored making its debut on the Phenia Films MLB archival page. One of the longest opening days for both teams in the 14 inning marathon. a pitching duel between the opening day starters for both clubs Curt Schilling for the Phillies and Bobby Jones for the Mets. Schilling pitches a powerful game shutting out the Mets through 8 innings and allowing only 2 hits. As Bobby Jones pitches a similar game shutting out the Phillies through 6 innings allowing only 4 hits. Phillies use five pitchers in the game while the Mets use six, and in the Mets 12th Phillies reliever Ricky Bottalico takes over the pitching duties for Philadelphia replacing Mark Leiter as the Mets manage to get the winning run on 2nd base after a lead off single from Brian McRae but Bottalico strikes out PH Jim Tatum to end the Mets threat in the btm of the 12th. Mets break through on Bottalico in the 14th inning after a lead off single from Matt Franco and a Brian McRae walk to start the inning. Bernard Gilkey singles and Franco to third then pinch hitter Alberto Castillo ends the 14inning affair, with a hard hit single scoring Franco from 3rd as the Mets take the season opener. Curt Shilling pitches 8 scoreless innings giving up the two Mets hits while striking out 9 and walking only 1 while Bobby Jones goes the 6 innings allowing no runs on 4 hits striking out 1 and walking 2.
