The problem with lawn aeration is the machine is very invasive in the soil and makes a massive mess. The better solution is to use a lawn scarifier. Scarifiers dig into and take out 1/4th inch of the thatch layer. much like a tiller without the wings a lawn scarifier digs out the actual thatch layer without leaving you with a ton of useless plugs all over the place. The thatch layer is the upper root mass of the grass that is slightly above and slightly below the soil surface. When the thatch layer gets to thick it doesn't allow water and minerals to pass through properly. which is why thinning the thatch layer out is an important part of the lawn care process.
