American Bandstand 1967 -Top 10 - Georgy Girl, The Seekers

Airdate: February 4, 1967 The Seekers’ biggest hit peaks at #2 today. “Georgy Girl“ would be kept out of the #1 spot for 2 straight weeks by the Monkees’ “I’m a Believer“. While it never made it to #1 on Billboard it did hit #1 in The Seekers’ home country of Australia. It was also #1 on Cashbox and, of course, it is #1 today on Bandstand (to the delight of the dancers based on their reaction as the song is revealed). “Georgy Girl“ was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song from the 1966 movie also titled “Georgy Girl“, starring Lynn Redgrave and James Mason, but lost to the theme to “Born Free”. Our dancers today are: Jeff Stein (twirling his fingers in the air sarcastically) with Marcel Poitier and Olivia Favela to his right at 0:30, Danny Lawyer at 0:33, Robin Morris at 0:35, Frankie Riggilio at 0:44, Stan Soburn & Lori Montgomery at 0:48, Marcia Silverman at 1:02, Wes Menasco at 1:18, Debbie Kane & Jim Miranda chatting with Dick at 1:49, Rick Moreno at 1:56, Jodie Briskin at 2:13, and Robin Miller & Billy Maloney at 2:27. On the riser at 1:21 is Frank Vanderpuil and the lovely Peggy Waggoner (watch for her holding Frank’s thumb while they dance….adorable!) There isn’t a clear shot of him during this song, but Don Sanuskar can also be seen dancing with Roni Menacker at various times (0:44 and 2:15) back by the “Top 10” sign and Dick’s podium wearing his light (Rango!) sweater vest. …..And at the 39th Academy Awards in about 2 months (April 10, 1967) The Seekers were not available to perform “Georgy Girl“ so Mitzi Gaynor performed a Broadway-styled version with backup dancers. After she was done, the applause went on so long they had to finally cut to commercial and they were still applauding when they came back. Love it or hate it, it is something to see. (it can be found in several places on YouTube)
