S&W Model 5906 9MM

Today's gun review is a Smith and Wesson model 5906 9mm. This particular gun is an earlier example with adjustable tritium night sights and the egg shaped trigger guard. Later models had fixed sights and a round trigger guard. This gun was made in 1986 and has a Serial number that starts with TCB. My joke is that it stands for Takin' Care of Business. It appears to have been a police surplus gun as it had heavy holster wear that I polished out. I found it on gunbroker for $225 buy it now and snapped it up. In the video I discuss how the S&W autoloaders were the product of the U.S. Army seeking a replacement for the .45 ACP 1911 after WWII. They were looking for a pistol that would have similar features to the Walther P38. Two famous pistols designs were developed out of submissions to the 1955 trials, Namely the Model 39 S&W and eventually the Beretta Model 92. Neither gun was chosen in 1955, eventually the U.S. Military did replace the 1911 with the M9 which is essentially the same as a civilian Beretta 92. Smith and Wesson sold the Model 39 commercially and it saw some success. In 1967 the Illinois State police adopted the Model 39 as the standard duty weapon for their officers. This lead to wider adoption of 9mm autoloaders by other Agencies across the US. Smith and Wesson kept updating the design adding double stack magazines to increase capacity and a aluminum frame which they brought out as the model 59. The 5906 is essentially a model 59 with a solid stainless steel frame rather than aluminum.
