All The Things You Are with Voicings & Improvisation

Practice your close & open voicings and work on improvisation with this classic standard "All The Things You Are" Close voicings are often called "rootless voicings", or - when played in the left hand - "left hand voicings". For maj7 and min7 chords we use 9th chords (maj9 and min9) without the root. For dom7 chords we use guide tones + 9 and 13, again without the root. You can also use these LH voicings to comp behind a soloist or behind yourself while soloing in the RH. Open voicings (or "spread voicings") are the most complete voicings we use in jazz. They consist of root - guide tones (3 & 7) - tensions - melody. Since we use both hands to play these open voicings, we have plenty of space to add extensions or to use alterations and reharmonizations. Notice we only play 2 notes in the LH (1 & 3 or 1 & 7)! * Free pdf of the sheet music: https://bit.ly/2U94uup * Free pdf of the sheet music (with annotations): https://bit.ly/37w2GP6 0:00 Practice the close voicings in the LH 1:10 Learn how to play the theme with close voicings in the LH 2:08 Work on comping with close voicings 3:01 Work on improvisation (scales and arpeggios) 4:55 Practice the theme with open voicings 5:54 Learn how to comp with open voicings 6:55 See how you can combine these techniques into an advanced version * Pause or slow down the video if necessary * Don't forget to apply these voicings and improvisation examples to other standards * Backing track used in this video:    • All The Things You Are chord progress...   * For more tutorials or free sheet music visit: https://jazzpianopracticesessions.com
