Metal Inset Presentation 1 & 2 MONTESSORI LANGUAGE LESSON. Preparation for handwriting

Metal Inset Material: (in this video I am using materials from https://www.nienhuis.com/us/) Two stands with a sloping back and narrow cornice at the bottom. On each stand, five metal frames, into each of which fits a metal inset. The square metal frames are red and the insets are blue. In the center of each inset is a small knob by which to hold it. The ten insets are: square, triangle, circle, ellipse, rectangle, oval, pentagon, curvilinear triangle, quatrefoil, and trapezoid. They have exactly the same measurements as the geometrical insets. Trays, supply of colored pencils in their containers, pencil holders, inset paper (white & colored) exactly the same size of the square frames, tiles and protectors. Have only three trays so there would be 3 children at the time working with the metal inset Presentation: Invite a child Show the child how to prepare the tray Take a tray, place the writing square pad, take 2 pieces of paper (one for the child and one for the guide) Ask the child to choose one of the metal inset from the curvy linear shapes (the first presentation) and place it on the tray Ask the child to choose three different colors pencils and place it on the pencils holder Have the child carry the tray on the table and sit down Tell the child: sit down in front of the table Take out the pencil holder Take out the frame, take out the the inset Place the inset inside the frame Take out the writing pad and place it in front of you Take the paper and place it on top of the pad Take the frame and place it on top of the paper and align them, put it up and align them. Inform the child that they are have to be aligned Take one color and emphasize use three finger, hold the pencil vertically and slide your fingers down Trace the frame with one color. Clockwise continuously Take away the frame Let the child see there is an eclipse (the drawing) there Place the inset on top of the line Trace the inset with other color, exactly on top of the other in one continuous movement Put the inset away Invite the child to see that there are two lines Take the third color and say :”I’m going to show you how to fill it in”. With the third color we are going to fill the shape with the line going up and down in continues line (continues curvy linear lines) Let him know: everytime we work with metal inset, we put our name and the date Place everything back on the tray Invite the child to do the activity When the child finish, show him how to put the activity away back on the metal inset shelf Show him where to put their work. Ex: in their cubby Note: After he can work with this, invite him to draw/ filling the shape with the curvy linear lines closer to each other The child can not draw inside the line When you see a child misuse the material (for example drawing inside the frame) intervene or redirect him Have only three trays so there would be 3 children at the time working with the metal inset Following exercise : Presentation #2 Use any insets / any shape, fill it in with straight lines vertically, top to bottom, left to right. Note: invite the child to fill the shape with the lines closer and closer to each other Direct Purpose: To acquire the mastery of hands with writing instruments Lightness of touch Keeping within limits Indirect Preparation: Indirect preparation for writing Indirect preparation for ornamental geometry (we use the different position for tracing: tangent, concentric ,etc) Age: Between 3 1/2 - 4 Preparation for writing: Polishing - Washing table (large space) - Rough and Smooth boards and tablets (small space) - Metal Insets (very small space)
