Lunguage 002.2 is out!! Took me a whole month to research and work on this... Language really is a complicated thing! Here on Lunguage we use Written Vernacular Cantonese to make it easier to learn word by word; you will see them as subtitles in the videos, words and examples on the A-Canto-A-Day posts. So I think it would be helpful to clarify the different types of written Chinese. As you continue your journey in learning to speak Chinese as a language family with a long long history, you'll find yourself faced with a completely different beast, the (Standard Modern) Written Chinese! You might notice Cantonese (or other variations) speakers do not usually write the same way they speak, but they can automatically translate the written language to their colloquial speech without thinking. You might also notice how speakers of different Chinese variations are mutually unintelligible, yet they seem to be reading and writing the same language. What's the deal with that?! Hopefully this little episode would help clarify what it is and how it became the way it is now. There is so much more to learn about this topic...
