The 100 Point Scoring System (from www.robertparker.com): 96-100: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume. 90 - 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines. 80 - 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws. 70 - 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine. 60 - 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors. 50 - 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable. Can you hear this? This is the Sound of Champagne corks plopping around the world to celebrate the holidays. While Champagne is my sparkling wine of choice there are alternatives available today: Prosecco, Cremant, Cava, Franciacorta, English Sparkling wine, and German Sekt. Yes, over the last few decades, German winemakers have invested heavily into producing high-quality sparkling wines and I want to check whether the best of German Sparkling wine can compete with Champagne. Today I will taste a selection of some of the high-end German Sekts blind and we will see, whether I can identify the pirate – a Champagne – from this sparkling lineup … Germany is one of the biggest producers and consumers of Sparkling wine. However, many sparkling wines are sold at pretty low prices and the quality is … inconsistent to put it mildly. But, that wasn’t always the case – several Champagne houses: Krug, Bollinger, and Mumms for instance have German roots and Germans worked at other Champagne houses before setting up their Sekt houses at home. So are the golden ages of German premium Sparkling wine production back? Maybe… The overall quality has been rising and the VDP – the Association of German premium-producers has released their VDP.SEKT.STATUT –self-imposed rules for producing sparkling wines a couple of years ago. I have added a link to the Statut in the description below the video They distinguish between VDP.SEKT and VDP.SEKT.PRESTIGE and their rules are generally stricter than the Champagne rules but is the quality at the same or even a higher level? There is only one way to find out!
