I loved Dance Moms growing up, but now that I am re-watching it as an adult I realize how problematic and racist the show, its plotlines, Abby herself, and a lot of the mom's were! Obviously production played a role in the way things played out on the show, but most of the 'entertainment' involving the Black folks on the show is blatant racism or covert racism. I am here to unpack it, talk about it. I also talk about the historical context and discuss the real life implications of the stereotyping and racist tropes fed to us in the name of entertainment. This the second installment of the dance moms breakdown where we analyze the angry Black woman trope, it's historical context, and three moments Abby purposely tried to antagonize Holly in order to get her out of her character.
