I loved Dance Moms growing up, but now that I am re-watching it as an adult I realize how problematic and racist the show, its plotlines, Abby herself, and a lot of the mom's were! Obviously production played a role in the way things played out on the show, but most of the 'entertainment' involving the Black folks on the show is blatant racism or covert racism. I am here to unpack it, talk about it. I also talk about the historical context and discuss the real life implications of the stereotyping and racist tropes fed to us in the name of entertainment. This is a series, and for the first installment it only seemed right to talk about Melissa's most racist and problematic moments because I felt as if they were too often swept under the rug, and I'm not with it.
