Impact Stories | Rose Hearn - Extra Time Programme

Rose Hearn is a regular and popular figure amongst those on a Tuesday morning Walk and Talk session around Central Park, Plymouth, and always has a smile on her face. However, she does admit that she “can't be without the sessions put on by the Trust” and is grateful for the friendship she’s carved out with Trust Community Coach Jamie Clewer and the other members. 82-year-old Rose is a lifelong Argyle supporter and season ticket holder. She tragically lost her son, who lived with MS for several years, and husband prior to the pandemic, which saw increased isolation and loneliness amongst older people. When she needed support the most, she found help through the Trust and Club. Rose explained how important and helpful it was to have assistance in a time of uncertainty: “You always feel so welcome and knew there was somebody there for you if you needed help. I have needed them because I lost my son four-and-a-half months before my husband died, then not long after it was COVID-19, so it was a difficult time, but you always knew there was somebody there. "Everyone has been wonderful, not only the Trust or the Senior Greens but also the Club. During COVID-19, I had a phone call from Kevin Nancekivell and one from Simon Hallett in America.” She continued by sharing how important these sessions have become for multiple reasons, saying: "I don't know what I would do without them [Walk and Talk sessions] now, quite frankly, because I look forward to Tuesdays and Wednesdays so much. I've made so many friends since I started coming and seen the Trust grow." The Extra Time programme has been running for over 14 years and is designed for people aged 55 or over to have the opportunity to be involved in fun activities in a welcoming and inclusive environment, providing health opportunities and social events. Every Tuesday, a Walk and Talk session is delivered in Central Park to help reduce isolation and increase physical activity amongst those over 55. The walk regularly sees around 30 men and women attend, meeting outside the Plymouth Life Centre before enjoying the beauty of Central Park and company of others. Trust Community Coach Jamie Clewer has been involved with the Extra Time programme for five years, leading the Walk and Talk session for four of these, and has built a strong bond with all participants. "I met Rose through the sessions that she was attending," he explained, "and she was such a lovely person and very welcoming as I was a new staff member in the group. You build relationships over the months, and Rose was someone I got on with. She was extremely friendly. "The sessions we run, mainly the Walk and Talk session and our Extra Time Wednesday group that Rose attends, are just social, nice, relaxed sessions for people to come to. "Our Extra Time group is a social wellbeing group for people to come along and get involved in many different activities, including physical activities, quizzes, seated exercise, and more. There are lots to choose from." Rose's continuous support of and attendance at Trust events hasn't gone unnoticed. As a member of the Senior Greens, her influence allowed funding to go to the Trust to help sustain the project. Dwain Morgan, the Trust’s Head of Business and Impact, has known Rose for several years and has seen the growth of these sessions first-hand. "We need to thank Rose and others who used to come to that session for backing us and supporting us over such a lengthy period," he explained. "I remember a few years ago, we probably had only 20 or 30 people for a tea dance. That was incredibly popular, but now there’s 50, 60, or 70 people at a session. It just reassures us that Extra Time is doing what it's supposed to do." Rose has nothing but praise for the sessions put on and the kindness of Trust coaches, and urges those to try and get involved whenever possible: "Try it! It may not be for everyone, but there are so many different things that you could join within the Trust. "Just give different things a go, and I'm sure you'd be welcomed with open arms!"
