On the 15th day of the 5th month of the Tibetan Lunar Calendar, Zamling Chisang (Universal Sang Offering Day) is celebrated by Tibetan Buddhists. As per the historical record, it is said that the 38th Emperor Trisong Detsen invited Guru Padmasambhava to Tibet to subdue the evil mountain deities that besets him. Guru Padmasambhava with his tantric powers tamed the evil deities and made them protectors of Tibet. Zamling Chizang is originally meant to commemorate Guru Rinpoche’s subjugation of the local deities and the founding of Samye Monastery, the first monastery of Tibet. To celebrate this event, it has been a tradition to burn Juniper incense (sang) on the hills especially in sacred sites. This year Zamling Chisang fell on 22 June 2024 and I am delighted to share some highlights of the occasion celebrated by Nangchen Nyernga Nepal on one of the hills of Jarsing Pauwa, Kathmandu. We also got the wonderful opportunity to watch Chödro (religious dances) by the monks of Dzogchen monastery on this auspicious day.
