Island Muse Frame Drum Solo

My first music video! Lol! I'm laughing because I'm not much of a performer but more of a ceremonial artist and drummer. I have always preferred to make ephemeral art that disappears into the ethers when the evening's over. Now here I am sharing something into perpetuity. The things we do for art! This is a shortened down version of an original composition that came in one flash of sonic epiphany while I was on the island of Crete, visiting with local beekeepers and searching for clues of the ancient Frame Drumming and Bee Goddess traditions there. I was staying in a restored Medieval mountain retreat made of stone deep in the mountainous countryside. The room I stayed in had a small stone alcove like a little cave, and I decided to sit within the small dome one evening to practice my frame drum. As I began playing, I heard this entire composition floating above me; there were intricate layers of talking drums, bells, bird sounds, bees, grass, and whistles. The drums were in a conversation meant to be played by a group of different players. When I returned to the US, I began teaching the composition to my frame drum troupe Propolis. Then the Global shut down happened... So I ended up needing to learn and play all the drum parts myself! You will see and hear three different frame drums and the djembe. In the original composition, these drums would be individually played by various drummers. This video is the first time my husband and longtime partner Eric and I have collaborated artistically in this way. We have a long history of other artistic collaboration - landscape design, gardens, renovations and even making a baby, but we have never produced music or shot a video together. Eric taught himself how to mix down and sweeten the audio recording for me on the fly and brought his videography and editing expertise to help bring this piece to life. We didn't get the bees and birds into this mix, and we shortened the original composition waaaay down to share a taste. When (and if?) we get to play LIVE in circle again, we will be playing this and other rhythms until the early morning hours...🌙✨ One day, I hope to finish teaching this piece to the Propolis's Drummers and bring the bees and birds in as well...🐝 In the meantime, if you want to learn to play the frame drum, please join us in the online SACRED DRUMMING ACADEMY! The doors are closing soon, so if you can't join this session, stay tuned for your chance next year! Please visit: www.sacreddrumming.com to learn more. May it be for a blessing.🤍 Krista Holland
