Chapter 3: Unforeseen Consequences After passing out during the Resonance Cascade, Gordon awakens to find the Anomalous Materials lab in complete shambles, with most of the personnel dead. Worse, strange alien creatures have appeared, some of whom appear to have completely overtaken the bodies of the staff, causing them to suffer grotesque mutations and attack and consume the survivors. With all communications systems disabled, Gordon is tasked by Eli and Kleiner to make his way up to the surface to call for help. Firstly, he must find a way out of the lab, all the while defending himself from the hostile aliens. In Black Mesa this does not happen - It is heavily implied that the headcrab Kleiner takes a liking to at 2:11 is Lamarr from HL2 - At 2:42, Eli mentions that he needs to find his family. In Half-Life canon Eli's wife Azian and daughter Alyx both live with him at the facility. Azian doesn't make it out of Black Mesa, but Eli manages to save Alyx (with the help of a certain interdimensional bureaucrat) - The scientist that gets gibbed by the laser at 3:20 is the same one who scolded Freeman for arriving late (the "test chamberrr" scientist) one chapter prior. As well, the scientist who told Gordon to push the crystal into the Anti-Mass Spectrometer can be found laying dead to the left of the room - In HL1, the guard at 4:45 is cut in half by the laser as opposed to being gibbed - The crowbar is found at 4:52 in the original HL1 - The scientists in the elevator at 5:00 cannot be saved - they are doomed whether Gordon presses the button or uses props to shatter the window - The Guard at 5:43 cannot die, even if repeatedly attacked by Zombies. In the mod version, he will perish if sustaining enough damage. In fact, a particular death animation played where the Zombie lifts him up by his neck and strangles him to death - Similar to HL2:EP2's "Little Rocket Man" achievement, where Gordon had to carry a Garden Gnome prop from the start of the game all the way to the White Forest Base, Black Mesa has an achievement titled "Rare Specimen" which requires Gordon to bring a purple hat found in this chapter all the way to Xen (another achievement, "The Rarest Specimen", requires him to bring it all the way to the end of the game). The purple hat itself is not shown in this video, but can be found tucked behind the pipes at 11:43 - The pistol originally was found in the Security Office at 17:53. It is now picked up from the dead Security Guard at 13:58, mirroring the same location as in HL1 - Shooting the zombies behind inaccessible doors, such as at 14:48, will wake them and cause them to wander around the room - Barnacles make their first appearance in the game at 15:45. They share the same model as in HL2 - G-man makes his third appearance at 15:57 - The first Houndeye in the game is encountered at 16:02. As opposed to HL1, where their sonic attack emits a blue arc, Black Mesa's variant warps the air around them instead - The first Vortigaunt is encountered at 19:20. Their AI has received a revamp since my last playthrough; they are now more prone to dodging attacks by side-strafing and utilize the AOE attack as seen in HL2EP2 - The song at the Headcrab elevator at 22:57 is titled ""Mesa Theme (UC Remix). The old song, "Unforeseen Consequences", can be found here:    • Joel Nielsen   Black Mesa Soundtrack ...   - The headcrab elevator is also known as the "Akira elevator", as the lift design bears striking similarities to a lift that is seen in the 1984 manga "Akira" (24:38). In fact, the level designer of that area has confirmed that Akira was the direct inspiration for the lift - The first Bullsquid encounter at 26:13. Bullsquids in this game are a lot weaker than their HL1 counterparts and aren't as aggressive to Gordon - HEV supply crates, shown at 27:20, are a new addition to the Definitive Edition, and contain supplies similar to the HL2 supply crates - The crates at 28:27 used to sway when jumped upon, in the mod version
