Making paper of sargassum seaweed as part of the Golden Tide project in Curaçao, 2019. Golden Tide was a project about the influx of the sargassum seaweed in the Caribbean sea, which kills local fauna and destroys natural habitats. The sargassum paper was used to paint images of the skeletal remains of species that died as a consequence of the seaweed. Scientists believe that the sudden growth of the algae is linked to the fertilizer run-off from the amazon river in addition to rising ocean temperatures due to climate change. In order to support the ongoing struggle against the largest seaweed bloom in the world, the paintings were sold as souvenirs on the tourist market in Curaçao. The proceeds of the sale were donated to Amazon Watch, an environmental organization that supports indigenous communities in their fight against the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest.
