✉️ Briefing: Since 1946, France engaged substantial military resources in Indochina to combat the Viet Minh, who were fighting for Indochinese independence. A succession of generals failed to put an end to the insurrection. The battle of Dien Bien Phu began on March 13, 1954 and ended on May 7: it was during this battle that the French army was bled dry, cornered and surrounded without fortifications and with only relative air support. Abandoned by its allies, France lost the battle and then the whole of Indochina a few weeks later. Casualties were catastrophic, and over 11,000 men were taken prisoner. Only 3,000 survived their internment. For today's French, Dien Bien Phu must not be forgotten, in the same way as the Battle of France or Waterloo: History is not made up of victories alone. However hard it may be to accept, it's important to commemorate and pay tribute to those who fell for their country, but also for their comrades.
