We installed our handrail at 36” Keep in account the hight of the bracket and the thickness of the rail. We’re achieving 36” at the top of the handrail, not the bottom. Cut your rail length to size, and add a return on both ends of the handrail, now the space between the rail and the wall, where your hand would go, should be no less than 1-1/2”. Install the rail brackets at both ends first, be sure your brackets are going into the studs. Mount your rail to the end brackets and then to the center brackets, and you are done.
