Role of a Cookstove in Family Life | Slow Living

Pull up a chair, and join our family as we spend a cosy weekend at my brother's home: two days of warmth and fire, cast-iron cooking, slow family time and lots of delicious food, all around 'The Heart of the Home': one of our Homewood Heritage stoves. This was filmed in mid-2020 (if you are wondering why the children look younger!), during the New Zealand winter. At the time, I was planning to create a bunch of useful videos about our stoves out of it all: the best way to light a fire/how to maintain and care for a stove/how to best run it for baking - that sort of thing, but unfortunately some sound recording issues made it unfit for purpose, and I have been sitting on the footage ever since, wondering what to do with it. This video is the end result, with me deciding to use the salvaged footage as backdrop to an extended voiceover that tries to communicate the very special nature of a cast iron wood range and the positive influence it can have in cultivating a more intentional and grounded home life. It is an attempt to explain something that really is much better experienced first-hand: that extra something that sparks into life as match touches paper, warmth fills the room, and elevates this kitchen appliance to a status higher than mere "thing". I hope you enjoy. Some things from the video that you may be interested in: 🎶 The song that starts at 4:06 is "Girl with the Golden Hair" written and sung by David (my father/grandfather to the children) who you can meet in other of our videos. 🎯 The disc flicking game seen at the beginning then again at 2:50 is 'Crokinole', a game from the 1800s, originating within the Amish and Mennonite communities of Ontario, Canada (this particular board handcrafted by me! Makes a great wood-working project, for anyone so inclined); can see more of this game in our video specifically about board gaming:    • Board Games by the Fire | Escaping Sc...   👩‍🌾 The farming game at 10:39 that Zelda, Janie and I are playing is 'Agricola: Family Edition', a modern board game that Zelda really enjoys [if I was smarter about this, I'd have an Amazon-affiliate link for you here!] 🍳 A bunch of the cooking seen we will get around to covering with more instructional-style videos in the future (certainly Janie's sourdough, and the skillet cookie, and I'm sure we'll do proper preserving/marmalade/etc videos in the future too). 🔥 This stove is our Homewood Heritage model, the original and most popular of the stoves that our family business builds - can learn more about this kitchen range by visiting our profile, or watching earlier of our videos.
