Essar Hot Strip Mill completes 20 years

Essar Steel’s pride, the Hot Strip Mill, recently completed 20 years of being in operation. Starting of as India’s first post-liberalization Hot Strip Mill, Essar Steel celebrates its journey from a 1.6 MTPA unit to a 3.4 MTPA world class facility. Commissioned in 1995, the HSM is a key feature of the sprawling Hazira facility which produces Essar Steel’s hot rolled coils. As a result of the continuous improvements in terms of processes and equipment, the HSM is capable of producing over 300 grades Despite the numerous problems faced, the expertise gained at the HSM has been transferred to multiple rolling facilities across the plant, specifically the Compact Strip Production Mill. In addition to this the HSM innovatively constructed a pipeline to use Corex Gas from the Corex units to offset the cost of using Natural Gas, due to its high calorific value. From producing low carbon steels to Interstitial Free and API X-80 grades, the plant’s versatility has garnered a reputation in the steel industry as a producer of high quality steel. In commemoration of its 20th Anniversary a small event was held at the Hazira facility, where employees offered gratitude to the almighty and reminisced about overcoming challenges, as a team.
