Theatre du Chatelet, Paris May 16, 2002 Renée Fleming Orchestre Philharmonique et Chur de Radio France Conductor: Evelino Pido An astonishing reading of the final scene of Bellini's Il Pirata. Though only his third opera, it is one of his greatest. In this live performance, Renée Fleming delivers some incredibly risky singing here from sinuously arching 20 second Bellinian lines in the famous aria Col Sorisso d'innocenza (a sort of warm up for Casta Diva, it being in the same key and having the same accompanying figure), to massive shifts in colour and vocal weight in the cabaletta, a two octave plunge, incredibly aggressive use of chest voice taken up to a G#4. It's rare that opera singing is this viscerally exciting. There are a few unfortunate skips in the recording in the final cabaletta, but this is the best source for the recording which preserves the voice in the highest fidelity. Fleming's singing of the Bel Canto repertoire remains controversial: some will find this interpretation beyond the realms of good taste, as Fleming is really pushing to the edge of what is possible in every parameter, but for this listener, rarely has madness been so effectively realised in an interpretation, and I've never heard this final scene more excitingly or beautifully sung. The orchestral support and choral singing is exemplary, conductor Evelino Pido deftly matching Fleming's intensity. In my opinion this is one the Fleming's three greatest Bel Canto roles, the other's being her 1993 Armida (Rossini) and her 1998 Lucrezia Borgia (Donizetti): one each of the famous bel canto masters. She sang many other roles in this repertoire very successfully also, but these are the most demanding, and the ones she remained most committed to.
