Autoethnography in Psychology: The potential for self development & development of theories

Autoethnography is a research method that involves the use of personal narratives to explore cultural experiences and phenomena. As a qualitative research method it is often used in fields such as anthropology, sociology, and cultural studies. However, it can also be used in psychology to explore personal experiences and the social and cultural contexts that shape them. However, despite its potential benefits, there seems to be limited understandings developed by psychological practitioners. This is problematised given that psychologists are in ways, the custodians of human behaviour and should be able to reflect critically and theoretically, on their lived experiences. While subjective, the potential benefits to the field of psychology remains relatively untapped. In this webinar, Prof Ally positions autoethnography as a tool that can be used by psychological practitioners to draw on their own lived experiences through the use of a demarcated method, that enables one to reflect objectively on subjective experiences. He will further argue this as an important approach as it may aid in the development and adaption of psychological concepts, models, theories and approaches.
