Kashmiri Chief Minister condemns Pakistan (Contains strong language)

(20 Sep 2002) 1. Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir state in India Farooq Abdullah 2. SOUNDBITE: (English) Farooq Abdullah, Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir state "You don't see the coercion from Pakistan? You don't see how they are threatening, how they are killing my workers everyday? You don't see that and you don't see a country, a nation fighting us? I'll blow the fucking nation, make a note of that." 3. Security STORYLINE: The Chief Minister of Indian administered Jammu-Kashmir state, Farooq Abdullah reacted angrily on Friday to widespread allegations and journalists reports of soldiers forcing people to vote in the first round of crucial polls in the state. You don't see the coercion from Pakistan? You don't see how they are threatening, how they are killing my workers? You don't see that and you don't see a country, a nation fighting us? " he asked reporters. The elections, which began on Monday, are seen as critical for peace in Kashmir, where more than 60,000 people have died in a decade-old insurgency. Kashmiri separatists want the troubled Himalayan region - divided between India and Pakistan - to be merged with Pakistan or made independent. The separatists say the elections are rigged to perpetrate Indian rule in the Muslim-dominated province. New Delhi denies the claim and has promised free and fair elections in an effort to deflate support for the insurgency. The elections are staggered over four days in September and October, and results are not expected before Oct. 12. Indian authorities said 47 percent of eligible voters cast ballots in the first phase of the voting and described the turnout as a rebuff to the rebels and to Pakistan, which also claims the elections are a sham. Pakistan, and Kashmir's separatist political alliance, the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, said there was large-scale coercion of voters. The Hurriyat, which rejects Indian sovereignty over Kashmir, is not participating in the elections.
