A visit to Ellen Terry's Smallhythe Place (A National Trust Property)

We'll take a look at the many layers of the history of Smallhythe place. From the 16th-century Tudor building, to the home of one of England's finest Victorian actresses Dame Ellen Terry, to the museum and theatre created by her daughter in her memory. It's hard to believe that this National Trust property was built in a once-thriving shipbuilding community with access to the English Channel. Changing landscapes then turned Smallhythe into a farming community and Smallhythe place into a farmhouse with a barn. In 1899, the story took an unusual turn, and Smallhythe place became the home of celebrated Victorian actress Dame Ellen Terry, as a retreat from her life in London, and London's West End. She lived her last 20+ years here, passing away at Smallhythe Place. On her death, her daughter Edith Craig (Edy) turned Smallhythe place into a museum to celebrate the life of her mother, and converted the barn into a theatre to stage productions in memory of Ellen Terry.
