Jewellery, my first significant silver pendant. 12 February 2023

First significant piece of silver jewellery. This is the first significant little bit of silver jewellery that I’ve made. The design is my own but I am of course influenced by the myriad of images on the internet. I’m particularly drawn to the work of the jewellery designer Ed Wiener, (America, from the 1940’s onward) I also like the jewellery work in the Museum of Fine Art, in Boston. I’ve never been there but I have found random references to it on the web. The silver, sea glass and Keum Boo gold piece I’m featuring here has been significantly influenced by Lesley Aine McKeown in Arizona who produces beautiful designer pieces that I’d like to be able to make. (I’ve never met her.) I’m only making these pieces for the sheer joy of designing and making them. I’m getting terrific pleasure out of the process but I have to admit I’d get a real kick out of thinking that someone would actually like to own my creations and be prepared to buy them. I don’t think any hobby jeweller could reasonably charge for all of the hours that they put into their work. Bearing in mind this video is been posted in 2023 what do you think the pendant would be worth??? I can’t be bothered to get involved with online selling. Anyway, thanks for looking in and for your kind words of encouragement, and don’t forget, if you want to consider making something yourself do have a look at Greg Greenwood’s YouTube jewellery making videos. A week or so ago I genuinely couldn’t have made this piece without Greg’s exhalant guidance on YouTube on silver soldering techniques. With ease, I’ve been able to balance little balls of silver solder not much bigger than a grain of sugar, on the 1mm square wire on the back of the pendant and flow it into a joint. If you don’t look at anything else take the time to look at the two videos on silver soldering and pick soldering, (Using a small pick to place solder to good effect) All the very best . . . Andy
