Time for Tea with Amy, a Genomic Counselling STP

Hello everyone - and we’re back!! Last week I spoke with Amy, who’s in her third year as a Genomic Counselling trainee based in Newcastle. She went into the programme with more of a counselling/care background but other trainees have gone in with more of a genetics background so you learn all the skills you need over the years so don’t worry if you feel like you’re not super experienced in one side! Counsellors in Newcastle see patients referred for all different regions but other places can have specialised teams - it depends where you end up. We spoke about her research project, what she gets up to day-to-day and how her work has changed due to COVID - in genomic counselling there’s been some pros to moving things online/over the phone. It was so interesting to see the patient side of genetic testing, always good to remember the impact the diagnoses can have! I hope you’ve all had a good start to February, stay safe Meg x
