Gates earned a Ph.D. in Composition at the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with renowned composer Howard Hanson. He later taught composition at Brigham Young University and Beloit College. Gates’ tender hymn “For I am Called by Thy Name” takes its lyrics directly from the King James Version of Jeremiah 15:16, a verse that poetically describes hearing God’s voice and feeling His love through the words of holy scripture. Gates set this verse to music in 1974, and “For I Am Called by Thy Name” has since become a treasured selection in The Tabernacle Choir’s sacred repertoire.
