Butterfly Drill with Frozen Blockers & Setters

Club Director Matt Houlihan sets up a modified butterfly drill. In this drill, there are four spots on the court that players are rotating through (tosser/defender on side A & B, and passer/attacker on side A & B). Players will rotate in a square, only crossing the net after they have attacked. As well, there are two frozen positions on the court. The frozen players will stay for a set duration (i.e. 2-minute rounds) and then they will switch with new players. The frozen positions are: 1. The setter on both sides 2. The blocker on both sides By adding in the frozen blocker and frozen setter, this allows the drill to be more game like, while also maximizing the repetitions and making the transition between positions more simple than a traditional butterfly. The focus for the blockers is to track the ball out of the hands of the setter and use a 3-step swing block to get their "head on the ball" (also known as two hands on the ball) to defend the line portion of the court. For the attackers, they are working on transitioning from serve receive outside of the court and then challenging the block down the line, aiming for a tool off of the outside hand of the blocker. For the tossers, they are working on playing line defense behind the block. Their goal is to see the attacker around the block (not get stuck hiding behind the block).
