He was also an enthusiastic admirer of The Tabernacle Choir and its weekly broadcast, Music and the Spoken Word, which he listened to regularly with his father, a talented amateur organist. Paulus’s most-performed work is the exquisite “Pilgrims’ Hymn” from his 1997 one-act opera The Three Hermits. The lyrics were penned by one of his primary collaborators, Michael Dennis Browne, an English-born author and librettist now based in Minnesota. “Pilgrim’s Hymn,” sung by hundreds of choirs around the world, was performed at the funerals of US presidents Ronald Regan (2004) and Gerald Ford (2007). And in a poignant concurrence, The Tabernacle Choir performed “Pilgrim’s Hymn” on its Music and the Spoken Word broadcast the very morning Stephen Paulus died in October 2014. (Lyrics) Even before we call on thy name To ask thee, O Lord, When we seek for the words to glorify thee, Thou hearest our prayer. Unceasing love, O unceasing love, Surpassing all we know. Glory to the Father, And to the Son, And to the Holy Spirit. Even with darkness sealing us in, We breathe thy name, And through all the days that follow so fast We trust in thee. Endless thy grace, O endless thy grace, Beyond all mortal dream. Both now and forever, And unto ages and ages, Amen.
